This Black Friday, Your Customers Are Asking ChatGPT What to Buy
The biggest shopping weekend of the year now begins in a chat window. More buyers open an AI assistant and ask what to buy before they ever reach a store or a search result. Whatever the assistant names first has a head start on the sale. The question is whether it names you.
For years the holiday shopping journey started the same way: a search box, a page of blue links, a few tabs, a comparison or two. This year, a growing share of it starts somewhere else entirely. A shopper opens ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI answers and asks a complete question. Best wireless earbuds under 150 dollars. A thoughtful gift for someone who just bought a house. Which air fryer is actually worth it. The assistant answers with a short, confident list of specific brands and products.
That list is the new shelf. And unlike a store shelf or a page of search results, it only has room for a few names.
The holiday funnel now opens in a chat window
Think about how people actually shop under time pressure. They do not want ten options and a weekend to research them. They want a trustworthy answer, fast. An AI assistant gives exactly that: ask a question, get three to five recommendations, often with a sentence on why each one fits. For gifts, for categories a buyer does not know well, and for the classic "what is the best X" question, it is faster than anything that came before it.
So the decision is increasingly made before any traditional marketing reaches the shopper. By the time they visit a site, click an ad, or walk into a store, the assistant has already framed the choice and named the contenders. If your brand was in that answer, you are on the short list. If it was not, you are invisible, and there is no second page to rescue you.
During the holidays, being absent costs more
Missing from AI answers is a problem all year. In the Black Friday and Cyber Monday window it is a sharper one, for three reasons.
The decision window is compressed. Shoppers are deciding quickly across many categories at once. They lean on the fastest trustworthy source more than usual, and that source increasingly is an assistant.
The intent is high. These are not idle searches. Someone asking an assistant for the best option in your category this week is ready to buy. Being named is the difference between a sale and never being considered.
The list is short. An AI answer names a handful of brands, not a page of twenty. Placement matters: being recommended first reads very differently from being mentioned fourth. The brands that get named, and named early, capture attention the others never see.
A page of search results has room for everyone on page one. An AI answer has room for about five. The holidays are when that difference gets expensive.
Why the assistant might not be recommending you
Here is the part that surprises most brands: this is not about how good your product is, or even how well you rank on Google. An AI recommendation is built from what the model has learned about your brand from across the open web. It leans on signals you do not control directly:
Third-party mentions. Editorial coverage, roundups, forum threads, and guides that name your brand in the right context. The model trusts what others say about you more than what you say about yourself.
Reviews and reputation. Consistent, credible reviews across the places buyers and models both look. Volume and sentiment both feed the answer.
Consistent, clear descriptions. The same story about what you sell and who it is for, repeated across your site and the wider web, so the model can describe you confidently instead of guessing.
Content a model can actually read. Clean, well-structured pages that state plainly what your products are, what they cost, and who they suit. If an assistant cannot parse it, it cannot cite it.
You cannot buy your way into that answer the way you buy a shopping ad, and ranking first on Google does not guarantee a spot in it. That is why a brand can dominate traditional search and still go unnamed when a shopper asks an assistant what to buy.
What you can realistically do about it
We will be honest about timing. AI recommendations are built from signals that accumulate over months, so there is no switch to flip that rewrites this season's answers by Friday. What you can do breaks into two parts.
Right now, capture what is already there. Make sure the brand and product information an assistant can already see is accurate, current, and consistent. Fix contradictory descriptions, outdated prices, and pages a model struggles to read. This does not manufacture new recommendations, but it protects the ones you have earned and makes sure you are described correctly when you do get named.
Starting now, build for the next peak. The brands that win the AI holiday season did the work in the months before it. Earn the third-party mentions, grow and tend your reviews, tighten your product content, and track how AI answers change as you do. Next Black Friday is eleven months away, which is exactly enough time to go from unnamed to recommended. The brands that start in November will be on the list a year from now.
The first step in either direction is the same, and most brands have never taken it: find out where you actually stand. You cannot fix a visibility gap you cannot see.
Know whether the assistant names you
Before the rush, it is worth knowing the answer to one question: when a shopper asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google what to buy in your category, does your brand come up? If so, where do you land when competitors are named alongside you, and how are you described? If not, which questions are handing your competitors the recommendation?
That is exactly what we measure. We track how often the major AI assistants mention and recommend your brand, which prompts surface you, where you place against competitors, and what to change so you show up more often. The holidays are a deadline worth using, this year to protect what you have, and starting now to own the answer next year.
